How to spot it: Listed as fragrance, parfum, or aroma
Why to avoid it: These are industry loopholes that allow companies to hide dozens of undisclosed chemicals, many linked to hormone disruption, allergic reactions and even neurotoxicity.
How to spot it: Look for ingredients ending in -paraben (like methlparaben, propylparaben, etc.)
Why to avoid it: Parabens are endocrine disruptors that mimic estrogen in the body. Studies have found parabens in breast tissue, and they're banned in many other countries.
How to spot it: Anything with PEG- followed by a number (e.g., PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil)
Why to avoid it: PEGs can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a potential carcinogen . They also increase penetration - meaning they can drag other toxins deeper into your skin.
How to spot it: Look for ingredients ending in -eth (like laureth-4, cetareth-20) or containing PEG
Why to avoid it: Created using ethylene oxide (a known carcinogen) and often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane. Common in shampoo, baby wash and baby products.
How to spot it: Listed as written above
Why to avoid it: These are harsh foaming agents commonly found in shampoo, face wash, toothpaste and body wash. SLS can strip your skin's natural oils, causing dryness and irritation. SLES is ethoxylated, which means it may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a potential carcinogen.
These are just some of the ingredients I recommend being cautions of when choosing products for yourself and your family. There are plenty more we'll explore in future guides/newsletters as you continue learning and swapping.
